The Desmond Tutu Centre for Leadership (commonly known as C4L) is really the tail wagging the dog. Our interest is really human development, that is training poor and unemployed youth. So our real interest in this overall initiative is to populate the various offices and assembly plants with heavy doses of “job creation”.

Youth unemployment rates are simply unacceptable. We are tired of coming up with small solutions to such a big problem as youth unemployment. Big problems need big solutions.

Oliver Tambo once said that a nation that does not take care of its youth has no future. And doesn’t deserve one…

Back in the days when the automobile was challenging the horse and buggy, Henry Ford is reported to have said: “If I’d have asked my customers what they want, they would have said a faster horse that eats less hay and poops a lot less.” The time has come for South Africans to define what exactly they need.

Let’s make youth unemployment and poverty obsolete – by reducing the emissions and cost of fuel and electricity while still using existing vehicles and technology. Why abandon “rolling stick” that is already out there on our roads? Let’s decentralise energy production – by helping people to socially and economically uplift themselves from a collaborative, cooperative approach.
